What is Abundance? My learnings from this season.

5–7 minutes

Introduction

Something that’s been on my mind, and I’ve been processing, learning, reprocessing, rethinking, and relearning in the season I’ve been in, is Abundance.

What is abundance?

Well… It’s different for everyone…

The definition from the dictionary is:

abundance

(noun)

1: an ample quantity: an abundant amount: profusion

a city that has an abundance of fine restaurants

2: affluence, wealth: a life of abundance

3: relative degree of plentifulness

If you asked me two years ago what abundance meant, I probably would have given you this definition. But that has changed a lot in the past few years.

What does the Bible say about abundance?

  • “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19
  • “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33
  • “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” – Psalms 23:1
  • “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” – 2 Corinthians 9:8
  • “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” – Ephesians 1:3

Versus what does the World say about abundance?

The world tells us the definition I referenced above. That makes it hard to see and understand Jesus’s teaching and the biblical application of abundance. Take Psalm 23:1, for example; I’ve been meditating on this one quite a bit to truly understand what David was trying to communicate. In addition to Matthew 6:33 and Matthew 7:7-8: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” (ESV).

My Interpretation

At first, I thought he meant physical abundance, and I think God does sometimes want to bless us with physical abundance. But just as he warned the Israelites over and over again as they were going into the promised land, we must not get comfortable with abundance and forsake Our God who blessed us abundantly. Physical abundance can sometimes be a distraction and a stumbling block.

Not that it is inherently bad or evil; I don’t believe that. I believe we should be grateful when God blesses us abundantly, and I do not think rich people are evil whatsoever.

I do believe we all have our own paths, our own giftings, and our own purposes; sometimes that path includes physical abundance, and sometimes it does not, but I believe in being grateful for whatever God blesses us with.

What Abundance Can Mean to Different People

To some people, abundance isn’t physical. It can be spiritual, and that can look different for everyone; it could be an abundance of time to meditate on spiritual things, or an abundance of spiritual wisdom. It could be wisdom in life or in topics that interest a person. It could be an abundance of time in general. It could be physical freedom to go where you want to go, do what you want to do. It could be an abundance of peace in your life. It could be an abundance of gratitude in your life. I now see that abundance can be so many things.

My Application

I now believe that God wants to bless us with the abundance we NEED to become the person he made us to be. He is our creator, and he knows our souls and the essence of who we are and who we are capable of becoming.

I feel an overwhelm of emotion as I write this because it’s a lesson that took me over two years to learn, but God didn’t give up on me when I wasn’t getting it at first. I also feel a sense of peace with where I am in my life right now. I have the abundance I need in this season, and if I can be faithful with little, then God will trust me with more in time. His time, not mine.

I’ve been thinking about writing about peace for so long, but I never fully got that concept out because this was it: my blog post about peace. It’s the peace I have found in the abundance that I’m in that is perfect for who I have become up to this point.

I’m learning to be patient with myself and to see myself more as God sees me: a child who is still learning, growing, and trying to understand.

How I Got Here

A few weeks ago, I was reflecting on all of my 2026 goals as we approach the last quarter of the year, and I realized I accomplished a lot this year- more than I thought was possible, personally- but there were a lot of goals I never got to, and I was a bit sad about it, and I kept praying about it.

Then, one morning, I felt like the answer came to me, or the Holy Spirit revealed it to me. The answer was: “Ask, seek, knock, but God isn’t going to bless you with something you aren’t ready for. Keep believing, keep staying in faith; you are right where you are supposed to be, and if it’s been too long, it seems to you in this season, there must be something in it that you still haven’t learned yet.” That’s it; that’s exactly what I needed to hear, and I’m still trusting that’s my lesson. I will stay in it until I’m ready for the next one.

Closing

I honestly love growing older and wiser. I laugh at that sentence because that is another thing I’ve picked up in the season I’m in. I’m so grateful for how far God has brought me, and I’m grateful to keep going on this journey with Him. My connection to Him grows, and my understanding of hard truths deepens over time, and I’m so grateful for that. It’s an amazing sense of peace when your trust isn’t in the world, but in your Creator, who guides every step you take.

Am I the only one God’s working on this whole “Abundance” thing with right now?

I would love to hear others’ thoughts on the topic- anything I missed that you want to add?

What’s God teaching you right now?

“Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into.“

– Wayne Dyer

“Not what we have But what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance.“

– Epicurus

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.“

– Eckhart Tolle
